Qualifying for AAU Nationals -- Overview
AAU Girls’ Basketball hosts three different National Tournaments ("Nationals"), with separate methods of qualifying for the tournament depending the the specific national tournament.
The specifics of qualifying for Nationals may be include many variables, but a general overview of how to qualify for each type of Nationals is described below.
Qualifying for AAU Divison I Nationals
Teams may qualify for the Division I AAU Girls’ Basketball National Tournament via one of two methods:
. District Qualifying Tournament ("DQT")
. Super Regional Tournament ("SRT")
Division I District Qualifying Tournaments
The number of teams from a district that qualify for nationals is based upon a number of factors that vary by district and the number of teams that have qualified for Division I Nationals via a SRT at the time of the DQT.
Districts may hold combined Division I and Division II DQTs or they may hold separate Divison I and Division II DQTs by age group. AAU Districts are strongly encouraged to hold DQTs for each AAU age group. In almost all age groups, Potomac Valley AAU holds separate Division I and Division II DQTs.
Super Regional Tournaments
Teams may also qualify for Division I Nationals at SRTs. For more information about SRTs, click on one of the SRT headings at left.
Qualifying for AAU Divison II Nationals
Teams qualify for Divison II AAU Nationals at their DQTs.
As noted above, districts may hold combined Division I and Division II DQTs or they may hold separate Divison I and Division II DQTs by age group. In almost all age groups, Potomac Valley AAU holds separate Division I and Division II DQTs.
It should be noted that teams competing in their districts' Division I DQT may qualify for Division II Nationals.
Qualifying for AAU Divison III Nationals
For 2008, AAU Girls’ Basketball has added a Division III National Championship. The 2008 Division III Nationals for all age groups will be held in Hampton, VA from June 30 to July 4.
Any team that does not qualify for Division I or Division II Nationals is eligible to compete in the Division III Championship.
